Gutting the bus

So today we tried to get out early and gut the bus out. But a few of us got a little too wasty face last night and then preceded to make plans to go to the zoo with their significant other. so while me, dietz, and fogs worked on the bus, karsten was enjoying a day at the zoo, with ginger girl.

So we left in three rows of seats in on the left and the right side. but on the right we took out the middle row and turned around the row in front so the seats are facing each other. we plan to put in a table. more work to be done tomorrow. good work fellas.

Look out Fresh

On May 28th, we drove the bus back. Karsten aka killroy, myer and fresh alongside Josh Fogarty aka Man Bear (Pig),drove the bus while i followed them in my car because the signals were not working. I really wanted to drive the bus, but of course suddenly no one felt comfortable driving my car, but completely okay with operating a school bus. So i drove alone, bored, and all the way from Hammond. Thanks Man Bear and Fresh for the help.

Heres what i know about the bus. It is a 1991 V8 gas fuel injected chevrolet engine with a Carpenter Shell. It seats 44 adults and 65 children and is 35 feet long. the height of the vehicle is approx. 10 ft. We bought it with 65,000 miles on it but the engine was rebuilt 2 years ago. the woman we bought it from has a husband who is a mechanic so it has been serviced by him since 1994. the state requires that a school bus be DOT inspected twice a year, so the bus is in excellent condition. it has an estimated fuel efficiency of 14 mpg in the city.

I had the engine checked out by Margot's over in Baton Rouge, and everything was fine. The engine compression check came back great with 5 of the 8 cylinders firing at 115psi, 2@110psi and 1@100psi. The mechanic told me that, when brand new, the pressure is only around 170psi anyway. Very good for a bus that's almost 2 decades old. the transmission was recently serviced, all the fluids were fine, the front two tires were recently replaced along with the rear brake pads. possibly the only negative results from the inspection was that the rear disk rotors were grooved, but that comes with age. the power steering fluid is seeping, but its probably not worth fixing. As of right now everything is in tip top condition. i would just like to get an oil change before we leave and that's about it. the bus was being used as a school bus just until the end this school year.

Blinkers work!!!!

So all I had to change was the flasher on the panel and everything started working again. The bus is now 100% functional. The inspection tags are even good until January 2010.

Proposed Itinerary

this is, of course, modifiable (both now and while on the journey). let me know what you think

DAY 1 (June 8th):

drive to colorado

DAY 2-6 (June 9-14):

COLORADO

National Parks: http://www.colorado.com/Articles.aspx?aid=42134
Rocky Mtn National Park is more on the way than any of the others

Hiking Guide: http://www.colorado.com/Articles.aspx?aid=42168

DAY 7 (June 15):
drive to vancouver

DAYS 8-13 (June 16-21):
BRITISH COLUMBIA

Days 14-16 (June 22-23):
drive to san fran, hang out for a day

Days 17-20 (June 24-27):
drive to grand canyon, hang out for two days ish
**if we want one of these days can be allocated to rerouting to vegas. i'm not into gambling or anything but i figure people might wanna go.

that still gives us 4-ish days of leeway to get home/reroute, etc. we'll also get to vancouver with plenty of time for josh to fly home for the wedding. this of course can be modified, i just think it'd be pretty sweet to spend some time in the grand canyon and colorado, in addition to vancouver (we'll be there for 6 days, if you count the day we get there).

Adults

I believe that obtaining insurance for this bus is one of those adult things. Like taking out mortgages, and maintaining credit scores. I kind of don't know how to do it. Apparently state farm does not insure buses, and so we are on to attempt two. I am about to call Avalon's fav hombre to try to work this out.

I officially head to NOLA on the morning of June 4th, and I will be bringing bus decorations. If you have any bus theme requests, let me know. There will be glitter.

First day working on the BUS

First day was kind of a bummer. We were unable to add the bus onto the family insurance or the company insurance. So I'm just waiting to hear back from the broker about getting insurance. Can't really do anything with the license plates until I get insurance so everything is at a standstill now. I don't want to start tearing out the seats until I get insurance because I think it will raise the price of insurance. Keep y'all posted on the rest. I'm also working on getting to turn signals to work. But that won't be too hard I hope. The fuse box is in an extremely awkward position which makes it extremely awkward to get to. Ehhh school buses. But still awesome.

Following the bus home!

So yesturday we bought the bus and drove it home from Hammond.
Thanks Boyd!
I just set up this blog and now I can upload from my phone. More pictures to come!
Peace
